Day for Universal Access to Information
DTM Calls for Greater Access to Credible Information to Counter Information Disorder
As the world marks the International Day for Universal Access to Information 2026, under the theme “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder,”
Development Through Media (DTM) calls for stronger transparency, open government and access to credible information.
The digital age has not only transformed the way citizens access and share information, it has also accelerated the spread of misinformation, disinformation, manipulated content and other forms of information disorder.
DTM notes that access to accurate, timely and verifiable information is a critical defense against information disorder. When public institutions proactively disclose information, citizens are better equipped to verify claims, challenge falsehoods and participate meaningfully in public affairs.
“Information disorder cannot be effectively addressed by restricting access to information. We need greater transparency, stronger public communication and citizens equipped with the skills to critically assess the information they consume and share,” said Dommie Yambo-Odotte, Producer and Executive Director, DTM
DTM therefore calls on government institutions to strengthen proactive disclosure of public information, including budgets, procurement, policies, development programmes and decisions affecting citizens.
DTM also urges media organisations, technology platforms, civil society and educational institutions to promote media and information literacy, responsible communication and digital inclusion, particularly among vulnerable and marginalised communities.
Efforts to combat misinformation and disinformation must also respect freedom of expression, media freedom and the public’s right to know.
Information integrity begins with access to credible information. An informed citizenry is better equipped to distinguish fact from falsehood and to participate effectively in democratic governance.
