Africa Public Service Day 2026: Strengthening Public Institutions and Partnerships for Water and Sanitation

Development Through Media (DTM) joins the rest of Africa in commemorating Africa Public Service Day (APSD) 2026, celebrated annually on 23 June to honour the contribution of public servants to national development and social transformation.

This year’s theme, “Enhancing Public Sector Institutions and Empowering Multi-sector Partnerships to Achieve Universal Water Availability and Safe Sanitation by 2063,” speaks to the urgent need for stronger, more accountable, and citizen-centred public institutions to deliver essential services to all.

At DTM, we recognize that access to safe water and sanitation is not only a development issue, but also a matter of human dignity, public health, gender equity, environmental justice, and inclusive governance. Achieving this goal will require deliberate investment in public institutions and stronger collaboration among government, civil society, media, academia, communities, and the private sector.

Civil society has a critical role to play in actualizing this vision by promoting civic education, social accountability, public participation, evidence-based advocacy, and amplifying the voices of underserved communities. Through media, research, and citizen engagement, civil society can help ensure that water and sanitation governance remains transparent, inclusive, and responsive to people’s lived realities.

As DTM marks this year’s APSD, we call for stronger public sector accountability, inclusive partnerships, and sustained investment in systems that guarantee universal access to clean water and safe sanitation across Africa.
