PRESS STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
5 June 2026

Development Through Media (DTM) joins Kenya, Africa, and the global community in commemorating World Environment Day 2026 under the theme “Climate Action.” This year’s observance comes at a defining moment for humanity as climate change continues to threaten livelihoods, ecosystems, public health, food security, and social stability across the world.

In Kenya, the realities of climate change are no longer distant scientific projections. They are lived experiences. From prolonged droughts in arid and semi-arid regions, devastating floods in urban and rural settlements, rising food insecurity, environmental degradation, displacement of communities, and shrinking water resources, climate change is increasingly becoming a social, economic, governance, and cultural challenge.

At Development Through Media (DTM), we recognize that the environment is not merely an ecological concern. It is fundamentally a human-interest issue. It affects how communities live, govern themselves, preserve culture, access justice, participate in development, and secure their future.

Environmental degradation disrupts social systems, widens inequalities, intensifies poverty, and disproportionately affects women, youth, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities.

As an organization committed to strengthening governance, civic engagement, media development, public participation, social justice, and democratic accountability, DTM believes that meaningful climate action must be people-centered, community-driven, and culturally grounded.

Climate action cannot succeed without informed citizens, responsive leadership, ethical media, and active civic participation.

Kenya’s climate response must therefore move beyond policy declarations and embrace inclusive approaches that empower communities to become active participants in environmental stewardship.

On this World Environment Day, DTM calls upon national and county governments, civil society organizations, development partners, educational institutions, faith-based organizations, the private sector, media practitioners, and citizens to work collectively in addressing the climate crisis.

Climate action must not be viewed solely as an environmental obligation, but as a moral, cultural, developmental, and generational responsibility.

Ms Dommie Yambo-Odotte,
