PRESS STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
10 Sept 2026
DTM Marks World Suicide Prevention Day 2026
On World Suicide Prevention Day, Development Through Media (DTM) calls for renewed collective action to protect life, promote mental wellbeing, and create communities where people experiencing distress can seek help without stigma or judgment.
DTM emphasises that suicide is not only an individual tragedy but also a social justice and public health concern, shaped by factors including poverty, unemployment, violence, substance use, social isolation, discrimination and lack of access to appropriate support.
DTM urges families, schools, universities, workplaces, faith communities, government, civil society and the media to strengthen early identification, compassionate listening, psychosocial support and timely referral.
The organisation particularly calls for responsible media reporting that reduces stigma, protects dignity and promotes help-seeking behaviours, while ensuring that young people are meaningfully involved in solutions affecting their mental wellbeing
As an organisation committed to amplifying the voices of vulnerable and marginalised communities, DTM pledges to use its media, community engagement and knowledge platforms to promote open conversations about mental health and strengthen collective action for suicide prevention.
Every life matters. Every person deserves to be heard. No one should face despair alone.
