Honouring Mothers. Strengthening Society – Mother’s Day 2026 Statement by Development Through Media (DTM
On this Mother’s Day,10 May, 2026, Development Through Media (DTM) joins the people of Kenya in celebrating and appreciating mothers for their vital role in nurturing families, building communities, and shaping the nation’s future.
As an organization committed to development, inclusion, civic engagement, and social transformation through media, DTM recognizes mothers as powerful agents of change whose voices and contributions must be acknowledged and amplified.
While we celebrate mother’s today, we also recognize the many challenges they continue to face, including the rising cost of living, economic strain, gender inequality, unpaid care work, limited access to opportunities, gender-based violence, and underrepresentation in leadership and decision-making spaces.
Many mothers continue to carry the burden of sustaining households and communities under difficult social and economic conditions, often without sufficient support systems.
DTM calls upon government institutions, media, civil society organizations, communities, and families to work together in creating an environment where mothers are protected, empowered, heard, and supported. This includes strengthening social protection systems, promoting gender-responsive policies, amplifying women’s voices in media and governance, and advancing equal opportunities for all women.
Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have a critical role to play in advocating for the rights, dignity, and empowerment of mothers and women across the country. Through strategic communication, advocacy, and community engagement, DTM remains committed to promoting inclusive development and social justice.
To all mothers in Kenya, we say:
Thank you for your resilience, sacrifice, love, and leadership. Your contribution to society is invaluable.
Signed:
Ms Dommie Yambo-Odotte,
Executive Director and Producer
