DTM Stands in Solidarity to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists
On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Development Through Media (DTM) joins the global community in reaffirming its unwavering solidarity with journalists and media workers in Kenya and around the world who risk their lives to pursue truth, justice, and accountability.
Since the United Nations General Assembly established this day in 2013, it has served as a solemn reminder that attacks on journalists are attacks on democracy itself. Each year, journalists face intimidation, harassment, arbitrary arrests, and violence for doing their work — often without any justice or accountability by the perpetrators. According to UNESCO, nearly nine out of ten cases of crimes against journalists remain unresolved. This impunity emboldens violators, and silences truth.
DTM believes that a free, safe, and independent media is the lifeblood of democracy and a cornerstone of human rights. We therefore call upon:
- The Government of Kenya to strengthen mechanisms for the protection of journalists, expedite investigations into all attacks against media practitioners, and ensure that justice is served
- Media houses and Civil Society Organizations to foster safe working environments, provide psychosocial support, and uphold ethical and professional journalism.
- The public and digital communities to value credible journalism, resist disinformation, and stand with those who speak truth to power.
At DTM, we remain committed to advancing media freedom, safety, and accountability through our programming, advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives. We will continue to amplify the voices of journalists — especially those at the grassroots — who tell the stories that shape our nation’s conscience.
Let this day remind us all that impunity for crimes against journalists must never be tolerated, and that injustice against one journalist is injustice for all.
