International Day for Universal Access to information (IDUAI)
Nairobi, Kenya — Development Through Media (DTM) joins the global community today in marking the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI). This year’s theme, “Ensuring Access to Environmental Information in the Digital Age,” underscores the urgent need to empower communities with timely, accurate, and inclusive information to respond to the climate crisis and promote sustainable development.
At DTM, we recognize that information is not just a right – it is a catalyst for action. Since our inception, we have worked to bridge information gaps by amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, fostering dialogue, and strengthening the role of media as a tool for accountability and social change. In the environmental space, our work has been guided by the conviction that informed citizens are better equipped to engage in policy processes, demand climate justice, and take ownership of local solutions.
Over the years, DTM has implemented programs that:
Promote access to climate and environmental data by simplifying technical information into formats accessible to grassroots communities.
Leverage digital platforms to ensure that environmental information reaches young people, women, and persons with disabilities, expanding inclusivity in public discourses.
Support community media outlets in coastal, rural, and peri-urban areas to highlight local environmental challenges such as deforestation, waste management, and water scarcity.
Build capacity among journalists and civic actors to interrogate environmental policies and strengthen advocacy for transparency and accountability.
As the digital age transforms how we create, share, and consume information, we remain committed to harnessing these opportunities to advance environmental stewardship and social justice. DTM believes that access to environmental information is not only about awareness but also about empowering citizens to make informed choices, hold leaders accountable, and safeguard the planet for future generations.
On this International Day for Universal Access to Information, DTM reaffirms its mission to use media as a bridge between policy and the people, ensuring that no one is left behind in the quest for environmental sustainability.
About DTM Development Through Media (DTM) is a pioneer media-based, not-for-profit Civil Society Organisation (M-CSO) in Kenya, dedicated to harnessing the power of media and communication for inclusive and transformative development. Through partnerships, capacity building, content creation, dissemination and advocacy, DTM empowers citizens—including youth and marginalised communities in the rural and urban areas—to actively participate in shaping the social, economic, and political decisions that affect their lives.
