Human Rights: Our Everyday Essential – DTM Commemorates International Human Rights Day

Nairobi, Kenya – On International Human Rights Day, under the theme “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essential,” Development Through Media (DTM) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advocating for human dignity, freedom, justice, and equal rights for all.

This year’s theme highlights that human rights are not a luxury or an afterthought—they are fundamental to everyday life, essential for the wellbeing of individuals, communities, and nations. DTM acknowledges the critical need for continuous efforts to protect and promote human rights in all spheres, including media freedom, gender equality, digital rights, and democratic participation.

In the face of increasing challenges such as online abuse, censorship, disinformation, and the targeting of marginalised groups, including women, journalists, youth, and persons with disabilities, DTM calls for immediate and sustained action. These threats are not isolated incidents but are part of a broader pattern of violations that diminish the fundamental rights of individuals and undermine democratic values globally.

DTM’s work at the intersection of media, governance, gender inclusion, and digital safety remains rooted in the belief that human rights are integral to the daily functioning of society. Access to reliable information, the protection of civic spaces, and the defence of marginalised communities are key to achieving a just, inclusive, and equitable future.

On this Human Rights Day, DTM urges the following actions:

Governments must ensure that human rights are at the core of their policies and practices, providing a strong legal framework for the protection of freedoms.

Media professionals must adhere to ethical, human-rights-centred journalism that empowers citizens to participate fully in democratic processes.

Technology companies must take responsibility for protecting digital spaces from harm, fostering an environment where people can safely exercise their rights online.

Citizens must be active in defending their own rights and supporting the rights of others, ensuring that human dignity, justice, and equality are upheld daily.

“Human rights are not just ideals; they are the essentials that shape our lives every day. Together, we must protect these rights for all, every day.”
